Buffalo, Africa’s largest bovid is the most dreamt after species to hunt. Their reputation exceeds them and many hunting campfire stories are told about Buffalo hunting experiences, the close calls and the unfortunate incidents where hunters have lost their lives. A willy Buffalo bull, known as a “Dagga Boy” is a beast that should be treated with great respect, especially when wounded. Buffalo can be hunted in the southeastern parts of the country on commercially operated land as well as the government hunting concessions. They are also available in the western and northern regions of the country on both Campfire (community-owned land) and National Parks managed concessions. Matetsi and Dande are particularly well known for their excellent herds and trophy quality. Whether it is a great trophy, hard bossed bull or a broomed (worn down horns) off specimen you are looking for, Zimbabwe has it all to offer. In some areas, herds of over a thousand strong can be found and often the best bulls in these herds straggle behind the moving herd. The trophy fees for animals hunted in the community hunting areas serve as their main source of income to these rural areas. The meat from all hunted Buffalos is donated countrywide to the protein deprived local communities as an incentive to conserve these magnificent beasts for the benefit of future generations. Buffalo are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required.
